God's Politics by Jim Wallis
review by Pastor Jay Schmidt
This book does not favor Republicans or Democrats—as the subtitle states, "why the Right gets it wrong and the Left doesn't get it." The author does an excellent job taking a thorough look at Christian values and relating them to the political arena. As the author looks back at the last election, he mentions that only two Christian values seemed to make it to the radar screen. They are gay marriage and abortion. He points out that there are other values that never got proper attention, and faults the Democrats for being too timid or reluctant to connect other Christian values to political viewpoints. The Scriptures are replete with statements to care for creation because it is a gift from God. When we drill for oil in the Alaska Natural Wildlife Refuge, for example, are we not going against that Christian value? When the United States is the only major western nation that has refused to sign the Kyoto Treaty to reduce global warming, is this not going against that Christian value? Other issues Wallis calls to our attention—our government needs to make significant changes in our health care system so that poor Americans have the same opportunities as the rich. He criticizes the recent tax cuts because about 70% of those cuts went to the wealthiest 20% of Americans. He contends these policies go against Christian values not because it is wrong for people to be wealthy, but it is wrong the wealthiest among us receive additional tax relief when the poor need it most. He lauds Republicans for having the courage to oppose the lax sexual values in our society and criticizes the Democrats for their failure in this area, because Hollywood is a source of support for Democrats. From the above examples, a clear picture is emerging. Mr. Wallis is giving his readers a way to evaluate the political process in America today.
